Mexicans refer to the Riviera as "Riviera Maya" while foreigners call it the "Mayan Riviera". It is stretching from Punta Brava just south of Cancun International Airport to Punta Allen just south of Tulum.

The Temple of the Descending God and El Catillo-the large temple (photo on the left)

 

Tulum means "wall" on Mayan language. This archeological site is the largest Maya construction built on the coast and is great example of late post-classic period-from AD1200 until the arrival of Spanish. The style of architecture is nowhere near the complexity of the Classic period (Chichen Itza).
